EUTEENS4GREEN Projects
#EUTEENS4GREEN Awarded Beneficiaries
Youth for Green future of Jonava district municipality
- 💡 Description
- The Applicant's young members will become coaches, gather 50 participants from local schools and the Employment Service and organize events for them with various attractive activities. The main problems addressed by the project are that the economic development of Jonava district municipality (Kaunas County, Lithuania) is not sustainable, the production sector here is highly dependent on fossil fuels, the transition to a less polluting production is slow. On 01/01/2022, 40 thousand inhabitants lived in Jonava district, of which 4.5 thousand are aged 15-24. There were 970 companies operating here, employing 8,600 people. The region has an extremely large chemical industry sector - over 1,500 people work in it (the largest companies are global companies - AB "Achema" (1,229 empl.), UAB "Gaschema" (125 empl.). It is estimated that 20% of the employees of the Jonava district are directly dependent on the chemical industry that uses fossil fuels (production of mineral fertilizers, specialized gases, glues and other products). At the same time, these industrial companies are one of the biggest sources of environmental pollution in the entire Kaunas region - environmental pollution from stationary sources in the area in 2021 reached 3,000 tons, of whose greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 2,400 tons. This industrial structure is not favourable for the future of the municipality's economy and society. One of the most important reasons for the problem is the conservative attitude of the local population (including youth) to business prospects other than the chemical industry, little understanding of the negative impact of the chemical industry on the environment, the health of the population, and the social and economic prospects of the municipality. The project aims to form the right attitude of young people to the prospects of the green course in the Jonava district, emphasizing the negative impact of traditional, fossil fuel-dependent industries on the environment and society and the opportunities provided by the green course. During the project, the Applicant's young members will become coaches, gather 50 participants from local schools and the Employment Service and organize events for them with various attractive activities in order to improve skills to fight pollution and carbon footprints, sustainable living, green skills, skills for green jobs and new small businesses. By participating, young people will understand the consequences and significance of the European Green Deal for their lives and will be able to get involved in activities that contribute to the implementation of the Green Deal in the municipality.
