Transition to a compost waste system in Tripoli
- 💡 Description
- Introduce a local compost system in Tripoli for sustainable waste management and community involvement in agriculture; reduce carbon footprint, promote sustainable food habits and seasonal food. The town of Tripoli is a small urban area in the rural area of Arcadia. Due to its agricultural surroundings, it is a perfect place to introduce a local compost system. Currently, most waste systems in Tripoli do not include any separation of garbage to be able to recycle it. Thus, all solid waste in Tripoli is poured into nearby landfills. Solid waste has been a problem in Tripoli for some years. In 2015, thousands of tons of waste were stranded in the town after the decision to transport them to landfills in Athens was cancelled. This led to a crisis that ended in the region declaring a state of emergency due to garbage pilling. As of 2022, steps have been taken to manage the problem, moving from landfills to a modern waste management system in the Peloponnese. While this will have a positive impact, considering the nature of the region, more innovative solutions could be pursued. The proposed project would start by introducing separate containers for organic waste in the city. These containers would be responsible for creating the local compost. Activities across all schools in Tripoli would educate students on the elements that go into the compost and which to leave out. Later, the compost would be offered to agricultural productions in the nearby region. This solution would reduce the solid waste that has to be managed and instead turn it into a circular economy opportunity. The project seeks to achieve the following objectives as described in the guide. Innovative solutions or pilots for testing innovative solutions The Activities will focus on: - Methods to reduce carbon footprint locally - Sustainable agriculture, food habits, and seasonal food. The results of this project are the following: Better management of solid waste in Arcadia Involvement of the community in sustainable agriculture Use of the specific opportunities of a region to test-drive sustainable waste management
- 🎯 Target Group
- 🌱 Expected Results
- The project aims to establish a circular economy in Arkadia where local products are consumed, waste is converted into compost and used to grow fresh vegetables locally, fostering a sense of community (100 participants). The quantifiable impact will depend on the scale and adoption of the project, including the reduction of solid waste sent to landfills(20 tons), an increase in local food production, and potential economic benefits. They seek in facilitating 24 hours of training activities, with the purpose of educating more than 25 PTC.
