MakerLab in Sao Luis is a collaborative DIY space, managed and used by local youth. It is a functional learning environment that encourages community learning, open-ended exploration and skills transfers.\n\"We are a youth association active in the region of Odemira, Alentejo Litoral. Our plan to set-up a collaborative DIY space, MakerLab, managed and used by local young people aged 15-24. MakerLab would be situated on the premises of the newly-opened Co.Re Centre in São Luís, managed by youngsters of GAIA Alentejo, and supported by mentors and local craftspeople from the community.\nMakerLab is envisioned as a functional learning environment that encourages collaboration, play and open-ended exploration, with several aims:\nTo grow employability skills for youngsters 15-24 in rural areas, supporting the ecological transition (circular economy);\nTo support learning practical skills and restore forgotten knowledge and expertise (inter-generational skills transfer);\nTo provide a physical space with tools for community self-building, repair and upcycle, (community DIY center managed by youth);\nTo raise awareness on empowerment of young people and their inclusion in participatory processes and community actions (participatory inclusion);\nTo encourage social cohesion and solidarity among youngsters of Alentejo Litoral (solidarity hub).\n\n\nMakerLab is planned to be a place where youth aged 15-24 can learn to make, repair and upcycle items on their own or with the help of local handymen who have the knowledge and skills. We want to empower rural youth to understand the global challenges and context, and to be able to generate impactful solutions in their local environment with their local resources.\nWe already have a room for the MakerLab, as part of Co.Re Centre, and the support from the local community who would be holding the inter-generational transfer of skills and donating some of the materials and second-hand tools to equip the MakerLab. Apart from that, we would be also endorsed by Odemira Municipality, as a valuable model of developing employability skills with young people focused on Circular Economy and regenerative practices that would benefit the whole Alentejo region.\nThe activities of the MakerLab will be coordinated by a young team of GAIA Alentejo, who would also maintain the space, look after the equipment, organize the skills-exchanges and assist the DIY actions of youth. \nAt MakerLab, young people will have a chance to learn about repairing old things with the aim of reducing waste, getting skilled in certain hands-on professions (woodmakers, electricians, tailors, etc.), strengthening the social cohesion in the local community and, finally, contributing towards a sustainable and resilient just society.\"

For example: Number of events / Number of participants / Number and type of material distributed / Expected research findings / Number of training hours, etc. \n\nTimeline of main activities for year 1:\nMonth 1-3 Preparation and setup\nMonth 3-12 - Monthly workshops with youth (9)\nMonth 4-12 - Monthly Repair Cafes (9)\nMonth 4, 6, 8, 10 - Awareness-raising actions (4)\nMonth 5, 7, 9, 11 - Green Transition talks (4)\nMonth 3, 6, 9, 12 - Quarterly revisions (focus groups) (4)\nMonth 12 - Harvesting Circle (1)\n\n Impacts:\n\nIncreased capacity of youth 15-24 to develop their own green skills towards local employment;\nIntergenerational transfer of skills and restoring know-how expertise\nFunctional community DIY hub as an innovative solution in a rural area;\nRaise awareness about sustainability and ecological practices, specifically on circular economy (reparation, upcycling and maintenance) and participatory inclusion; \nSocial cohesion and solidarity among youth of Alentejo Litoral.\n\n\nWe plan to assess the impacts of the project with the following measures (related to the impacts listed above):\n9 realised workshops and practical trainings, number of youth aged 15-24 reached, ‘before and after’ skills assessment, a number of youth entering the green job market with skills gained at MakerLab, storytelling evidence of progress as part of the Harvesting Circle upon finalising the project.\n9 realised Repair Cafes, 9 mentors and handymen involved, qualitative evidence as part of the Harvesting Circle.\n100 DIY visitors to the MakerLab, initiatives initiated during the year, 5 personal projects completed, 4 quarterly focus groups evaluation.\n4 awareness-raising actions at the MakerLab, mentions in local media, 4 Green Transition talks, number of participants, involvement of local decision-makers, qualitative evidence as part of the Harvesting Circle.\n4 Quarterly focus groups revisions, anecdotal evidence, 1 Harvesting Circle. \"
