- 💡 Description
- Reducing food miles and Fast fashion. We are going to grow a garden in our school and start a sustainable fashion design club. \n\"We are home economics students in St.\nMary's Secondary School Edenderry. Our project is called \"\"Garden of Eden\"\". It is named after our town :\nEdenderry. We want to make our school more sustainable. We thought of two ways to make our school\nmore sustainable. We are studying about the impact of \"\"Food Miles\"\" and \"\"Fast Fashion\"\" on the\nenvironment and we want all students in our school to learn how to grow their own food and to learn how to\n\"\"upcycle\"\" clothes so as to reduce our environmental impact. We have already started a small organic\nvegetable garden using old lockers as garden beds and we are learning about sowing seeds, caring for\nthem , harvesting them and cooking them. We are writing a cookbook about what we grow with our\nvegetables. We want to develop our school garden so that more students in the school will be able to use it.\nWe want to build a greenhouse in the school , a safe gardening area, water harvesting and an indoor\ngreen wall. We want to buy sewing machines so we can use them to learn how to upcycle clothes and set up\na textile upcycling club.\n\nThe Garden of Eden\nThe school garden :\nAs a trial we have already started our project in a tiny area in our school .We are growing lettuce ,\nbroccoli , cabbage and herbs .We grow these in old lockers. We do not use artificial pesticides , we pick the\ncaterpillar eggs off ourselves. We are taking photographs of our work . We pick recipes to learn how to cook\nthese vegetables. We take photos of our work and we plan to write a recipe book to show what we can cook\nfrom the food we grow. We will make colcannon next week ( Mashed potatoes and cabbage)We want to\ncontinue these activities and make sure an area of our school is dedicated to growing food. We successfully\ngrew 2 peppers on a window sill last year , imagine what we can do with a greenhouse !!\nWe really want to expand our garden, make it a permanent part of our school so that other classes in the\nschool can use it. We want your help to will build a greenhouse and to build a safe gardening area using\nupcycled containers. We want to make herb wall gardens for the school, we think a vertical garden would be\na good as it would save space. We want to try water harvesting so as to save rainwater to use in the\ngreenhouse. we will set up a compost area in our garden We want to grow native fruit trees beside the\nfencing in our school so as to increase the biodiversity of the area.\nWe will cook these vegetables in out home Economics class. We will continue to make our cookery book to\npromote what we are doing.\nWe will run an awareness campaign in our school promoting organic gardening. We will teach all the\nstudents in the school about the problem with Food miles .We aim to get every first year (160students) in\nthe school to plant one vegetable in our garden beds, one garden bed per class.\nWe will sow tomato plants and grow them in a greenhouse and then run a competition to see who will take\ncare of them best over the summer.\nWe will use seaweed to organically fertilise our garden and peat free compost,\nUpcycling club\nWe have learned that fast fashion is bad for the planet.\nWe want to create a Upcycling fashion club. Our Home Economics teacher will help us run this club. Our\nfist project will be to make the hanging herb garden by repurposing fabric from charity shops and what we\nfind at home. We will learn to make old clothes into new items instead of buying clothes.\"
