EUTEENS4GREEN Projects
#EUTEENS4GREEN Awarded Beneficiaries
Youth 4 Green Transition – Y4GT
- 💡 Description
- The project will support and empower youth and create possibilities for improvements in their regions. As a result, 300 young people will be trained on the topics of climate change and the Just Transition. The aim of the "Youth 4 Green Transition" project is to train 300 young people in two coal region cities in Bulgaria (Kyustendil and Stara Zagora) on the topic of climate change and Just Transition through the educational workshop Climate Fresk (https://climatefresk.org/) and to train new facilitators to organize their own events using the educational game. The idea for the Climate Fresk started in France in relation to the UNFCCC Paris Agreement and the realization of the need for a critical mass of people around the world to be reached with climate education that will help people change their attitude towards the fight against climate change and will make them active participants in the cause. The goal of the French scientists is to train 1 million people globally by the end of 2022, with the number for Bulgaria being 10,000 people – of which a little over a thousand have been trained so far. Participating in the Climate Fresk educational workshop enables participants to understand the relationship between human activity and the consequences for the environment and climate, encourages them to think about global and local decisions that they can be part of and engages them in a bigger group of like-minded people with whom they can exchange experience and start common action in the fight against climate change. Organizing Climate Fresks is of great importance in the fight against climate change, as the workshop is a powerful tool that until now educational, governmental institutions and civic organizations have not used, while at the same time, it is a source of scientific information presented in an accessible language and in a playful way. The partners of the project – the organization Ecological Manifesto, ManEco – have accumulated experience and methodology in organizing the first Climate Fresks in the country. In this way, the "Youth 4 Green Transition" project is a very good opportunity for organizing the game ten more times. Targeting young people from Kyutendil and Stara Zagora, the desire is to prepare the new generation of young citizens on the topic of climate change, encourage them to actively work on it or to make as citizens and consumers informed choices regarding climate change and build a bridge between the youth from the two regions. For the successful implementation of the "Youth 4 Green Transition" project, the plan is to visit 10 high schools in two coal region cities – Kyustendil and Stara Zagora – and through the educational game Climate Fresk to engage 300 young people 15-24 years old with topics related to climate change and the Just Transition. To achieve these goals, the project builds up on the experience of creating educational content on topics such as climate change, biodiversity and green entrepreneurship, which they developed this year for teachers from coal region schools that have eco clubs and extracurricular activities dedicated to those topics. The project has already established connections with authorities and teachers from 5 high schools in the region of Kyustendil. These contacts will help to organize one Climate Fresk in each high school in the best possible period of the academic year. For the region of Stara Zagora, it depends on the already established connections with the Regional Economic Development Agency and teachers from high schools in the city to organize Climate Fresks in 5 more high schools. The project has also recently contacted Wind of Change, which is the first organization that has facilitators and organizes Climate Fresks in Bulgaria and PanGea – the youth wing of WWF Bulgaria. The project will collaborate with them to provide three facilitators for every Climate Fresk who will work with groups of 30 youths divided into three subgroups of 10 participants each. For the schools in Stara Zagora, it will be needed accommodation for the facilitators every time they visit schools there. After every Climate Fresk, pre-published educational materials will be distributed and participants will be encouraged to be trained as facilitators on the expenses. This aim is in line with the goal of the French scientists from the Climate Fresk association to create a critical mass of facilitators that will enable rapid growth of climate education and shared understanding of the challenge that climate change is on one side and will create a possibility for young people to redistribute knowledge among themselves and to reach other groups (friends, family) and classes in their school with the educational game, on another. In this regard, possible facilitators will be located with the help of the school teachers and will provide all needed assistance and training for them to become certificated facilitators.
- 🎯 Target Group
- Students and youth from Kyutendil and Stara Zagora, 15-24 years old.
- 🌱 Expected Results
- By 2024, at least 300 young people from two cities in coal regions will be aware of climate change challenges and will be encouraged to become facilitators of Climate Fresk, organize the game for their peers, to become part of a bigger network of same-minded people and will be supported if they want to work in the “green” field in the future. Specific impact the project will have in providing knowledge to young people on climate change and just transition topics, encourage them to organize Climate Fresks in their community – for their schoolmates, families and friends, to be empowered to make their voice heard and promote their ideas to decision-makers and civil society. Through this and previous activities organized for the youth in the regions of Stara Zagora and Kyustendil, young people will be empowered as active citizens that have the confidence to self-organize and work on climate change-related topics.
