- 💡 Description
- GreenGate is trying to explore the potential of escape games as a strategy to promote sustainable attitudes beliefs, focusing on environmental sustainability, renewable energy and climate change.\nIn order to tackle the global sustainability crises, big and rapid transformations are needed across society. These societal changes require a wide-spread shift in consciousness, beliefs and attitudes, towards a more sustainable mindset. In the last few years we have observed a growing interest in the use of gamification approaches for climate change education, sustainability, human rights and many other priority thematics. While most practices are related to digital gaming, there is a new trend which is still unexplored: escape rooms. Escape rooms can be defined as: ‘live-action team-based games where players discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms in order to accomplish a specific goal in a limited time’ (Nicholson 2015). At their core, escape rooms are a relatively new entertainment and interactive format in which small groups of players work together within a given time limit to complete a series of challenges (puzzles) and win (escape a real life room). The application of (recreational) escape rooms to educational contexts has become more popular as a way to engage learners in their learning environment, and encourage both hard skills and soft skills such as collaboration, communication and leadership (Kinio et al. 2019). The “The Green Gate of Transition” project idea is coming from this recent trend that is related to the Escape rooms and is trying to explore the potential of escape games as a new strategy to promote sustainable attitudes and beliefs, focusing on environmental sustainability, renewable energy development and climate change. The project will be implemented in Florina, Western Macedonia, Greece by a group of young people living in the area and having a passion about the concept of the Escape rooms. A shipping container that is home to an innovative Escape room has become the main idea of our project proposal. Teams of participants are locked in the container and have to complete a series of brain-taxing puzzles to get out focused on the topic of environmental sustainability, renewable energy development and climate change. The container will be situated in a central park/square of the city of Florina, after having the permission of the Municipality of Florina and it will be available and accessible to all citizens, for free, for a period of 3 months.
