💡 Description

Our project idea is to install a green roof in one building of our dormitories at the university campus where we are studying in Chania in the region of Crete, Greece.
Our project idea is to install a green roof in one building of our dormitories at the university campus where we are studying in Chania in the region of Crete, Greece. We realize that green roofs are gaining interest as nature-based solutions to counteract several environmental and socio-economic problems associated to urban sprawl and climate change. Considering the large existing space in the top of the buildings in our cities, the integration of green roofs will support the cities’ transition towards resilience and improved use of our resources. The green roof system can support the goals of the green transition as it adds natural elements to the urban environment, increases the green space, enhances the urban biodiversity and contributes to energy efficiency of buildings. As young people and also students, we want to demonstrate to the public and to our local societies how the implementation of green practices can help the local communities and address many social and environmental problems. Hence, our idea is to install a demo green roof in a dormitory where students live, since we see it as a perfect example to present how this practice can be adopted by young people and improve the living conditions in the building. With this example we can show how a green roof can increase the energy efficiency of a building, an issue of great importance for our region that still relies mostly on fossil fuels for electricity generation, and enhance the urban resiliency and robustness to climate change effects. Overall, our idea is an environmental, economic and also cultural project, aiming to combine design, sustainability, accessibility, affordability and investment on green solutions in order to help deliver the European Green Deal goals.

"We plan to participate and present our project in an event in October hosted by The International Ecological Engineering Society.
Also, during the next year we will select and analyse statistics, data and the results of our project, creating a new data base for our website. "
