Project Syra SSI aims to address the technical, social, economic, and political issues associated with the Just transition in thewIsland of syros by engaging youth in the policy making process\n\"Our project Syra Smart Sustainable Island (Syra SSI), is to be implemented in possible different phases inside 2023 in the island of Syros (EL422, Cyclades, South Aegean, Greece), and aims to promote the role\nof the European Union in regional policy, raise awareness on climate policy and the European Green Deal, as well as equip members of the local youth and wider community with the right tools, in order to advocate\nfor environmental change, and better comprehend the risks of social exclusion from the green transition.\nThe aim is to address the following themes:\n1) Renewable energy, storage of renewables, energy efficiency in buildings, and the upgrade of the local banking system for green investments;\n2) Ensuring the resilience of mid-aged workers occupied in the high-carbon-intensity industry through reeducation programs, and awareness raising on future Green Employment opportunities;\n3) The promotion of Sustainable Tourism and Sustainable Tourism Models;\n4) Addressing the issue of Environmental Security (Biodiversity/ Air and Water Pollution);\n5) In the context of the island’s rich naval history, promoting the transition of the island’s big shipyard to a sustainable hub for an emerging Green Maritime Industry;\n\nThe overarching goal is to achieve political and social change through active participation in the island to ensure locally produced renewable energy, affordability and social inclusion, and the mitigation of environmental security threats like air and water pollution thus improving the standard of living. In order to achieve these changes, we are planning to interact with 40 motivated and self-aware young leaders through different activity types: working groups; study visits; a summer school (early of June), and ultimately, civic activism and political proposals.\n\nThe learning cycle is as follows:\n- First, raising awareness and ensuring the students understand fundamental concepts (Regional Policy, Climate Change, Environmental Security, the Just Transition Mechanism etc.)\n- Secondly, identifying the problems of Syros and promoting innovative solutions that will reinvigorate the island.\n- Thirdly, implementing the solutions through interaction with local actors and policy proposals in a structured paper.\n- Lastly, evaluating the outcomes of the project and ensure the establishment of a long lasting mechanism (e.g. a permanent Green Forum of Students) to act as a platform for political dialogue and green innovation in Syros.\"
