#EUTEENS4GREEN Awarded Beneficiaries
Our Sustainable Europe
- 💡 Description
- OSE promotes Malta in the EU Green Deal Just Transition Fund through youth-generated grassroots concepts on low-carbon energy, sustainability, and circular economy by utilising youth creativity. As a member-state of the EU since 2004, Malta has subscribed to the European Green Deal and the Just Transition Fund, both of which are facilities that have enabled our country, the smallest and most densely populated in the EU, to adhere to a set of policies that will make us more energy independent and committed to sustainable development. The most important of these policies is the National Sustainable Development Vision for 2050 adopted in 2021. As an NGO that has fostered European unity and the values that come with it for the past 50 years, JEF has declared the promotion and fostering of the EU's green energy transition and sustainable development agenda - as the national representatives of these values, it is only fair that JEF Malta will promote these values at a national level. The aim and scope of OSE is to go beyond simply promoting policies at a national and European level, but to commit to generating grassroots ideas on the expansion of low-carbon energy sources and tapping into the creative spirit of youth participants towards building a more sustainable society and circular economy that will further Malta's integration into our European family. JEF Malta shall diversify its portfolio of events to include hackathons and interactive workshops where instead of a 'top-down' stream of information from expert panels to attendees, a circular flow of ideas can take place between panelists and youth participants (to whom JEF Malta targets its events), mirroring what OSE hopes to achieve in terms of the lasting impact of deepening Malta's commitment to the green energy transition. This shall be done in addition to the traditional seminar format JEF Malta is reknowned for. The timeline for our planned activities, which shall be exclusive to people aged 16-30, shall take place as follows: 1. Air Pollution Hackathon: A hackathon gathering participants to come up with creative solutions to air pollution in Malta. Registration for the event shall take place 1 week prior to it taking place in the form of teams of up to 3 people - over the course of that 1 week, applicant-teams will be able to form their ideas based on application forms that will be provided on our events page on Facebook. A lineup of judges from a policy-making entity, a meteoreological monitoring agency and a local business startup will address the event before the teams will have up to 4 hours to develop their ideas, which they will have 20 minutes to present to the judges. Prizes will be given out to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. 2. Our Sustainble Mediterranean A traditional-format event for JEF Malta that will include invitations to the embassies of a non-EU UfM member-state, an EU and UfM member-state other than Malta, and a representative of an EU institution. A 2-hour seminar shall be organised regarding the present and future state of collaboration on the fight against climate change and the creation of a shared regional circular economy between the EU, the UfM and their member-states, moderated by a member of the executive board, after which questions will be taken from attendees. A 3-hour lunch will take place afterwards whereby attendees will have the opportunity to network and enjoy a complimentary buffet. The event shall aim to have a minimal Co2 footprint using sustainable utensils. 3. Malta's Green and European future A discussion shall be organised involving invitees from 2 local environmental NGOs and 2 policy-making entities as roundtable panelists regarding whether or not enough is being done to shift Malta towards its green transition commitments at a European level.
- 🎯 Target Group
- 🌱 Expected Results
- Expected results should be reflected in quantitative manners. For example: Number of events / Number of participants / Number and type of material distributed / Expected research findings / Number of training hours, etc. This project will increase the knowledge youths have of climate policy-making and will increase their participation within the dimension of climate action. This will ensure that climate policy-making in Malta will be positively influenced by the grassroots activism and other activities of youths. A final report on the findings of the project will be available after qualitative assessments will be made regarding each event in order to measure the quality of outreach and quantity in terms of attendance. This will be made available upon its compilation in order to support the project's objectives.
